Fushimi Canal & Sake
Concrete canals, wooden barrels, morning fog.
About this route
Fushimi is not Venice. The canals are concrete, built for transporting sake barrels by boat. This route follows the waterway past brewery buildings that still produce using the underground spring water that made Fushimi famous.
You’ll stop for a mini-tasting at a fifth-generation family brewery. The morning fog rises off the water at 8am and smells of rice and fermentation. This is a working industrial district that happens to be beautiful.

About Fushimi
Fushimi is a sake-brewing district with concrete canals. The main Inari shrine path is famous and crowded. This area is everything else: the brewery district, the canal walks, the backstreets where families have made rice wine for ten generations. The morning fog off the water smells of fermentation.
Best time: 7:00am–9:00am
