Behind Philosopher's Path
Not the canal. The trails above it.
About this route
Everyone walks Tetsugaku-no-michi, the Philosopher's Path. Almost no one climbs the trails behind it. This route takes you up through a bamboo grove to hidden temples on the hillside, then to a spring where locals still collect drinking water.
The bamboo is thick enough to block all sound from below. The moss is always wet. From the top you get a view of the city that the canal walkers never see. The descent follows a different path, through a residential area with gardens that open to the street.

About Gion / Higashiyama
The eastern hills hold the Kyoto most visitors think they have seen. They have not. Gion at 6am is a residential district where delivery bicycles outnumber tourists twenty to one. The temple approaches are stone-paved and quiet. The restaurants that serve locals open early and close before the evening crowds arrive.
Best time: 5:30am–8:30am
