About this route
Arashiyama gets 50,000 visitors per day. At 7am it gets about twelve. This route enters the bamboo grove from the north, before the main gate opens, and takes you through the forest while it is still silent.
You’ll hear the morning prayer at Tenryu-ji temple — just you and the monk. After, a tofu kaiseki breakfast by the river while the first tour buses are still parking. The route continues through the residential backstreets that most visitors never reach.

Arashiyama gets 50,000 visitors a day. Most of them see the same 200 meters of bamboo path and leave. The western district extends far beyond: residential lanes, riverfront paths, temples that do not appear in guidebooks. The trick is timing. Arrive at 7am and you have the place to yourself.
